Now that Make: magazine volume 4 is hitting newsstands, I am free to link to my article from volume 3: DIY Security Bits.

I believe the word you want to use, in this very specific context, is quench, not squelch.

1 a : PUT OUT, EXTINGUISH b : to put out the light or fire of c : to cool (as heated metal) suddenly by immersion (as in oil or water) d : to cause to lose heat or warmth
