As for current employee count, we’re still well under 1,000. I suspect what you’re seeing is that virtually every Mozilla employee has a linkedin account (we tend to be early adopters :) and that some people who now work elsewhere might not yet have updated their accounts.

Any idea where or who would have those numbers?

That might be a little tricky to track down, the closest I could find from a search was Netscape having 2,500 employees when taken over by AOL (according to Wikipedia citing a C|Net article mentioning AOL’s soaring share price), and Mozilla having 500-1000 employees according to Linked in (although with 768 employees with linked in accounts I suspect total employees is over 1000).
